A: No. Weathering steel forms a stable, protective rust layer that prevents further corrosion. Provided they are installed properly (including drainage and ventilation measures), weathering steel exterior panels can last for decades.
A: During the initial weathering process, minor rust runoff may occur. This can be effectively controlled through proper detailing—including the installation of drip edges and a gravel base. Pre-weathered or sealed surfaces can completely prevent initial rust runoff.
A: Virtually no maintenance is required. Weathering steel does not require painting, sealing, or coating. In coastal environments, occasional rinsing with fresh water is sufficient to remove salt deposits.
A: Initial color changes will appear within a few weeks. A mature, stable rust layer typically forms within 6 to 24 months, depending on climatic conditions. Accelerated rusting treatments can produce the final appearance immediately.
A: Yes. In high-salinity environments, we recommend using thicker gauges (3 mm and above) and rinsing with fresh water periodically.
A: Stainless steel fasteners (Grade 316 recommended) should be used. Never use galvanized, copper, or brass fasteners—otherwise, electrochemical corrosion will occur.
A: Although the initial cost may be higher, Corten steel requires no maintenance and has an extremely long service life, making it highly cost-effective over the building’s lifecycle.
