Corten steel are a family of mild steels that contain additional alloying elements mixed with carbon and iron atoms. But these alloying elements give weathering steel better strength and higher corrosion resistance than typical mild steel grades. Therefore, corten steel is often used in outdoor applications or in environments where ordinary steel tends to rust.

Corten steel is a steel to which phosphorus, copper, chromium and nickel molybdenum have been added. These alloys improve the atmospheric corrosion resistance of Corten steel by forming a protective layer on the surface. It falls into the category of reducing or eliminating the use of paints, primers or paints on materials to prevent rust. When exposed to the environment, the steel develops a copper-green keep-active layer to protect the steel from corrosion. That's why this steel is called corten steel.

In the United States in the 1930s, coal wagon manufacturers noticed that certain steel alloys developed a layer of rust that, when exposed to these elements, would not corrode the steel, but would protect it. The durable, earthy, orange-brown sheen of these alloys quickly became very popular among architects and continues to this day.
